I played my weekly RedHot Poker Tour game last night. I was late getting there, but thankfully I was able to get a spot at one of the tables before they went on the Waiting List.
Turns out I sat at wonderful table - full of fun, boisterous people. We enjoyed about 90 minutes together before we finally started losing players and had to close the table down. The rest of us had to find new places amongst the remaining tables. I ended up at a table, again, with a gent named Kim. He's a good, patient player and we enjoyed sharing a few stories between each other.
As the night progressed, I found myself playing in a manner that I'd always wanted to. I was bullying some of the players when I knew I had the weaker hand, but knowing that I was exploiting some weakness in their games. Before I knew it, there were only 2 tables (16 players) left and I was the big stack at my table!
The Blinds were getting higher and taking a toll on the shorter stacks (of chips) and soon both tables were looking at each other to see how things were going. Our table found itself down to 4 players and the other table had 5 ... so, only one more player gone meant the rest move to the Final Table and pick up more points.
I said to myself, just survive ... don't do anything stupid ... and you'll be in good position at the final table. Of course, that went out the window 2 hands before we made it to 8 people. I went into a hand with Kim and at the one point where I should have bet large, I didn't. Kim called my weak bet and got the card he needed to beat me on the River. Turns out I did have beat at the point I should have bet big. A large amount of my chips gone ... lessoned learned.
So, it turned out I made the Final Table despite that setback, but I had the second shortest stack of chips.
The short stack bowed out on the first hand.
Two hands later, I had no choice but to go "All In" as I would be out of chips in 2 more hands. Unfortunately, 3 others went "All In" as well!!!
Once we all flipped our cards, it turned out I had the strongest 2 - Kd Qh!! But once all 5 cards had been flipped over, the guy who had the second largest stack prior to that hand paired one of his 9's and took the HUGE pot.
So, I bowed out 7th!
I'm quite happy with my performance and learned sooooo much last night. Maybe next week I'll get back to the final table, but in a stronger position.
